Sustainable food systems – Why should youths care?

STEPUP, in partnership with FEMRITE, is engaging young people in arts-based approaches to influence people to care about making food systems sustainable. The project, titled Youths and Arts for Food Systems Transformation (YOUFS), is funded by McKnight Foundation under its global Collaboration for Resilient Food Systems (CRFS).

It is implemented in Eastern Uganda where various projects are co-creating agroecology knowledge with farmers.

Emotions play a major part in decision-making and these are often fed through the arts. The project uses poetry and essay writing, music, dialogues, and online campaigns, to inspire people to care about making food systems more sustainable. In Eastern Uganda, challenges to food systems are not only climate, soils, poverty and limited market access, but apart from a few individuals, a population that has accepted its fate and does not care nor believe it can transform it. Young people are migrating away to urban employment because farming and food- system options present limited prospects for their aspirations. The aim of the project is so that more young people and communities care about making food systems sustainable in Eastern Uganda.
