Is Climate Smart Agriculture making sorghum farming systems in Eastern Uganda more resilient?

STEPUP is working with a consortium of partners including Uganda Christian University (UCU), the Centre for Ecosystems Research and Development (CERD) and Tech-Savvy Research and Policy Consulting Limited to investigate this in drought and flood-prone sorghum systems in Eastern Uganda.

The project title is Co-monitoring the effectiveness of existing Climate Smart Agriculture Technologies, Innovations, Management Practices and Strategies (CSA TIMPS) with youths – evidence for business and decision support.

It aims at generating and communicating evidence on the effectiveness of Climate Smart Agriculture technologies, innovations, management practices and strategies abbreviated as CSA-TIMPS that have been promoted through projects and programs over the last 10-15 years. Funded by the World Bank through the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), this research is expected to contribute to its broad objective of developing resilient and sustainable crop, livestock and fisheries value chains.

Youths are trained and involved in the research process with the aim of motivating them to take active interest in CSA and research. By working side-by-side with seasoned scientists, youths benefit from gaining work experience while being mentored in soft skills such as professional self-conduct, technical writing and communication, team work, transparency, and engagement with farmers and food systems actors. As such, the research further evaluates the impact such an activity has on the participating youths.

Research findings will be disseminated to inform policy, business-investment and household decision-making to foster context-responsive scaling of CSA-TIMPS.
